Profeta Farms

Moving from Sustainable to Regenerative

Many farmers tout their agricultural practices as “sustainable,” eschewing pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics, etc. These practices are meant to sustain the viability of the farmland and not degrade the environment, as farming practices all too often do. However, take a more detached look at the term, and one begins to think about how much further farming practices could go than merely “sustaining” the health of our system. If the arable land we are working on has been farmed conventionally with aggressive tillage and chemical usage, surely the responsible thing to do with that land is not to just “sustain” its status quo. Rather, we ought to do whatever we can to improve the system’s health.

Regenerative farming is the next step some farmers are taking to not only sustain but improve their environment. We seek to completely remove petrochemicals in the form of fertilizer and pesticides, reduce aggressive tillage, introduce active biology into our soil, plant cover crops aimed specifically at soil health improvements, and balance macro and micro nutrient levels in the soil. All this in the name of building up our ecosystem’s health, that we might leave it healthier than we found it.
